What is TEDx?

TEDx is part of the global TED movement - short, powerful talks from people with ideas worth spreading. While TED events are organised at an international level, TEDx events are independently run in local communities, giving a platform to voices that might not otherwise be heard.

TEDxUWA is one of Perth’s most respected events, run by the University of Western Australia, and it attracts a wide range of speakers, from researchers and artists to entrepreneurs and advocates.

The Theme: Parallels

In 2022, I had the absolute honour of being invited to speak at TEDxUWA’s Parallels event. The theme was all about exploring different perspectives and bridging gaps between contrasting ideas, experiences, and identities.

For me, that meant sharing my personal journey growing up with hearing loss and navigating the world with a cochlear implant. My talk challenged the stereotypes and stigma often tied to the word “disabled” - a word that, for many, still carries misconceptions.

Why This Talk Mattered

Speaking at TEDx wasn’t just about telling my story; it was about starting conversations. I wanted people to walk away questioning their assumptions about disability, and to understand that inclusion is not just about meeting a checklist, but about changing mindsets.

We spoke about identity, confidence, and resilience - values that have shaped not just my personal life, but my business, my community work, and the way I connect with people.

The Preparation

Behind the scenes, TEDx is intense. I worked with incredible speaker coaches, rehearsing over and over to make sure every word landed with impact. I collaborated with a team of passionate volunteers who poured their energy into making the event unforgettable.

The Day Itself

Walking onto that stage, I could feel the weight of the moment. The lights were bright, the audience silent. But as I began speaking, nerves gave way to purpose. I wasn’t just talking to the crowd in front of me - I was speaking to every young person who had ever felt “different” or underestimated.

When I stepped off the stage, I knew I had left a piece of myself up there, and hopefully, planted a seed in the minds of everyone who listened.

Why TEDxUWA Will Always Stay With Me

TEDxUWA wasn’t just a speaking gig; it was a turning point. It showed me that my story could spark change, and that using my voice could help dismantle harmful narratives.

If you ever get the chance to attend or be part of a TEDx event, do it. It’s a space where ideas can truly change lives.
